Leave it to one of the newer kids on the block in the automotive industry to take the biggest steps towards fuel economy gains and carbon emission reduction. Kia had the largest improvement in both those categories by a sizeable amount in the EPA's recent "Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2011" survey, with an 11.6 percent fuel economy gain, and adjusted CO2 performance reduction of 10.1 percent from 2009 to 2010. Kia also tied for the highest Corporate Average Fuel Economy title at 27 miles per gallon on 2010 models, and placed second among all others for CO2 values.
How was all this possible? Well, in order to stay atop the fuel economy and carbon reduction game, Kia created a global alternative fuel and powertrain research program in conjunction with its EcoDynamics philosophy to create fuel-saving and emission-cutting technology. The efforts from the program can be seen in the Kia Optima Hybrid that hit the market in 2011, and the forthcoming hybrid version of the Kia Rio. The Rio hybrid, available in a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback features Stop and Go technology, the first among subcompact cars to offer the environmentally friendly feature.
