Test Drive 2017 KIA Forte near Denver CO

Vehicle Overview

Since its 2010 debut in the North American market, the Kia Forte has been one of the few compact cars to go far beyond its segment's economy focus. For 2017, the Forte receives a major update, ostensibly halfway through its second production cycle. The headlights and taillights have been restyled, and the engines now use multi point injection rather than gas direct injection of years past. Three trims are available: LX, S, and EX.

InteriorAs a two-row, five people-seating four-door compact sedan, the 2017 Forte has a passenger volume of up to 96.2 cubic feet (without the optional sunroof). The trunk yields 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space, even though it can be extended into the cabin by folding down the bench-style rear seat. On the S, the woven cloth seat trim is replaced by black sports-style upholstery. The EX has leather-appointed seats that include front-seat heating capability. For comfort and convenience, the 2017 Forte, at the base level, has steering wheel-mounted controls, Bluetooth for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, remote keyless entry with trunk release, and a four-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system that includes SiriusXM satellite radio service. Upgrade to the S to add cruise control and overhaul the infotainment unit with a six-speaker audio system that comes with a 7-inch color touchscreen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based control. Exclusive to the EX are push-button engine start, a smart key function, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

At the front of the 2017 Forte are a pair of projector beam halogen headlights, which are enhanced by orange LED positioning lights and automatic on/off light control on the S and EX. The EX in particular has the addition of front fog lights for more penetrating illumination when needed. Power-adjustable mirrors are attached to the front doors. At the back, the sports-oriented S stands apart with its spoiler, while the EX is unique with the addition of rear LED combination lights. Wheels on the new Forte are 15-inch steel ones on the LX, 16-inch alloys on the S, and 17-inch alloys on the EX.

Mechanical / Powertrain - Forte Information
Powertrain

Powering the 2017 Forte is the Nu, which is a 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. However, on the LX and S trims, the Nu is manufactured as an Atkinson-cycle engine: meaning that it has a shorter compression stroke and a longer expansion stroke. The result is increased fuel efficiency-at the expense of output, which is 145 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque. The EX gets the regular Nu engine, which produces 19 more horsepower and 21 more lb-ft of torque than its Atkinson-cycle counterpart. The LX gets a 6-speed manual transmission, while the other two trims roll with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is accompanied by Sportmatic technology to exercise more control over gear shifting. On the LX, you can opt for the 6-speed automatic gearbox that is standard on the S and EX. However, a drive mode selector-which consists of Normal for regular driving performance, Eco for boosting fuel efficiency, and Sport for a more exciting ride-is omitted from the LX, while appearing on the upper-level models. For ultimate stability when driving on uneven surfaces, the 2017 Forte has a MacPherson strut suspension design at the front, and a torsion beam suspension design with coil springs and monotube shock absorbers at the back. On the S, Kia tight-tunes the suspension for a sportier driving feel, even though the automaker does so at a cost to its ability to absorb turbulence. For sharp handling and precise cornering, the Forte uses motor-driven power steering for precise handling and cornering.

Safety - Request a Personalized Kia Test Drive
Safety

For protection in the event of a car crash, the 2017 Forte comes with a pair of airbags that face the driver and front passenger, dual side impact airbags installed on the front seats, and roof-installed dual side curtain airbags that flank both rows of seats. Other standard safety features on the Forte include electronic stability for keeping you on the intended driving path, traction control to maximize tire impact with the road surface, four-wheel disc brakes to keep stopping distances short, anti-lock braking to prevent the wheels from locking up when applying the brakes, hill start assist for safe driving when shifting from park to drive on a slope, and brake assist for additional stopping power when necessary. On the S or EX, you have the choice of adding advanced safety features like blind spot detection, forward collision warning, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking.
