2024 Kia EV9 Overview

The Tesla Model X is the original all-electric SUV and thus a vehicle that all similar models are compared to when they debut. One of those new options is the Kia EV9, and there is an important difference here in that the EV9 is a midsize SUV whereas the Model X is a crossover. You may ask then why even compare them, and the reason is that the EV9 MSRP starts at around $56,000 and ranges up to about $73,000. The Model X, on the other hand, has an MSRP that ranges from about $95,000 to $105,000, which is a significant difference. With that in mind, let’s compare these models to determine if the extra money is worth it, and if you have your heart set on a crossover, know that the EV6 is an option as well.

Both automakers take a similar approach in that there are just two core trims: a standard configuration aimed at the average consumer and a performance configuration. The Kia EV9 is a four-door SUV with a rear liftgate that measures about 16.2 feet in length and has a 7.8-inch ground clearance. The Tesla Model X is a four-door crossover with a rear liftgate that measures about 16.5 feet in length and which has a 5.4-inch ground clearance. That ground clearance is quite low for an SUV. Even the EV6 gives you 6.1 inches of ground clearance and the higher ride height that you expect from a crossover.

The big difference when comparing the Kia EV9 vs Tesla Model X is that the Tesla model has two rows and can seat up to five while the Kia model has three rows and can seat up to eight. You do have the option of second-row captain’s chairs, which knocks the seating capacity down to seven. Dedicated cargo space is bigger in the Tesla, which is to be expected, but that space in the Kia is strong for the class at more than 20 cubic feet. Legroom is superior in the Kia in both the first and second row, and while we don’t yet have final specifications, Car and Driver noted in its first-hand experience that you can easily accommodate adults in the third row.

The final EPA-estimated range for the Kia EV9 is not yet available, but based on what Kia has told us thus far, we expect the range to be similar to the Tesla Model X at between 330 and 350 miles. The EV6 actually outperforms its EPA-estimate ranged, so you’re looking at range that is as good or better than the Tesla in a larger vehicle overall and at a much lesser price. The standard Kia model makes at least 200 horsepower and more depending on the configuration, and the performance model makes about 380 hp. Much greater performance is available with the Model X—more than 1,000 horsepower in fact—but the Kia configurations will more than meet the needs of the average driver.

The price difference when comparing the Kia EV9 vs Tesla Model X may lead you to believe that the Tesla is far ahead in terms of tech, and that really isn’t the case. Tesla opts for a 17-inch touch screen. Kia opts for dual 12.3-inch touch screens. All of the advanced driver assists available for the Kia are included standard, and the Kia base package is actually more robust overall. The biggest difference with the Tesla is the self-driving mode, which is included with the more expensive Plaid model.
