Since its debut in 1993, the Kia Sportage has thrived in the ultra-competitive SUV market. It has been able to accomplish this by meeting the widespread customer need for a smaller version of full-size SUV, albeit with their main attributes still in place. For 2017, Kia redesigns the Sportage for its fourth production cycle. The crossover vehicle now has three trims: the LX, the EX, and the SX Turbo.

2017 KIA Sportage Interior Designed and marketed as a compact crossover vehicle, the 2017 Kia Sportage accommodates as many as five adult occupants. Cargo volume in particular is measured at 60.1 cubic feet, and you can always create more space for luggage by folding down the rear seatback. Upgrading to the mid-level EX adds 10-way power adjustability with power lumbar support on the driver's seat, front-seat heating capability, and leather seat covering. And if you move up to the top-level SX Turbo, you also get front-seat cooling capability, steering-wheel heating capability, and 8-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat. At the base level, the Kia Sportage's infotainment comprises a six-speaker stereo system with a 5-inch touchscreen. The EX is upgraded with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay apps to enable you to use your smartphone to control the stereo's head unit. Also, on the EX, a 7-inch color touchscreen replaces the 5-inch display. On the SX Turbo, Kia installs an 8-speaker Harman/Kardon system with an 8-inch color touchscreen. There are a couple of interior conveniences that include Bluetooth, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and steering wheel-mounted controls. Kia adds push-button engine start system, dual-zone automatic climate control with an auto defog system, and a super-fast smartphone-charging USB 2.1 port on the EX. The SX Turbo is unique with its navigation system, HD Radio, a SiriusXM radio subscription, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, an auto-dimming rear mirror, and a remote garage door opener and closer.

2017 KIA Sportage Exterior

Combining sharp edges and smooth surfaces that recall the design language of modern fighter jets, the brand-new, 2017 Kia Sportage is an absolute delight to see. Plus, instead of putting together pieces of metal on the frame, Kia uses a steel unibody construction for the Sportage so that it has true strength and integrity. At the front of the vehicle, there's a black-and-chrome grille flanked by automatic projector beam headlights, which Kia upgrads to bi-xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs on the SX Turbo. Going with the EX adds fog lights, which halogen bulbs are replaced by LEDs on the SX Turbo. By the front doors, the power-adjustable side mirrors get heating capability on the EX and LED turn-signal indicators on the SX Turbo. On the top of the Sportage are sturdy roof rails if you go with the EX, and they are joined by a panoramic sunroof if it's the SX Turbo. A spoiler hovers at the back of the SUV. On the SX Turbo, the rear spoiler is joined by LED combination lamps, a chrome-finished dual exhaust system, and a smart power liftgate. Sportage alloy wheels are 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches on the LX, EX, and SX Turbo, respectively.

2017 KIA Sportage Powertrain

On the Sportage's LX and EX trims is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that has an output of 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The SX Turbo has a different engine; indeed, it is named after it. The SX engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 that produces 237 horsepower (if linked with the standard front-wheel drive) or 240 horsepower (if linked with the optional Dynamax All-Wheel Drive) and 260 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission, which comes with a Sportmatic shifter to enable more control over gear shifting if you choose. Fuel economy peaks at 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, and the crossover vehicle tow up to 2,000 lbs if equipped with trailer brakes.

2017 KIA Sportage Mechanical

The 2017 Kia Sportage uses a stabilizer bar-fortified four-wheel independent suspension that comprises a MacPherson strut design at the front; and a multi-link design with high-performance dampers at the back. Harnessed to the suspension is motor-driven power steering to ensure precise cornering, in addition to a turbulence-free drive.

2017 KIA Sportage Safety

For crash protection safety, the 2017 Kia Sportage provides front impact, side impact, and side curtain airbags, which are all governed by rollover sensors for appropriate deployment or deactivation. Also on the crossover SUV are electronic stability control, traction control, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, a rearview camera, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, and hill start assist and downhill brake control systems. The SX Turbo is stocked with a lot more safety features, which include autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot detection, lane-change assist, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, and a sensor-based front and rear parking system that complements the rearview camera. For its outstanding performance in crashworthiness and front crash prevention tests administered by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the organization named it a "Top Safety Pick+": its highest such honor.
