2023 Kia Soul Overview

Comparing the 2023 Kia Soul vs 2023 Toyota C-HR is an interesting contrast for anyone in the market for an affordable crossover SUV. Critics have long called the Soul one of the best value propositions in the class, and that value has been reflected in the high and consistent sales numbers. Drivers interested in the Soul now have the option of the 2023 Kia Soul, which has recently arrived at Arapahoe Kia with a new exterior design and more advanced driver-assistance technologies. The starting MSRP is significantly lower than that of the 2023 Toyota C-HR. The question then is does Toyota deliver on that premium or is it expecting you to pay more for a reputation it has earned with other models?

There are obviously great differences to the exterior designs of the Soul and CH-R. The Soul has long been known for its signature boxiness, but the 2023 Kia Soul arrives with a style that is a bit more subdued and perhaps mature. The 2023 Toyota C-HR, on the other hand, has a more traditional car-like crossover aesthetic, but it is certainly sleek and stylish. Form factor is comparable. These are both small crossover SUVs with four doors and a rear liftgate. The Soul has a 6.7-inch minimum ground clearance, a 102.4-inch wheelbase and a 165.2-inch length, which is approximately 13.75 feet. The CH-R, on the other hand, has a 5.9-inch minimum ground clearance, a 103.9-inch wheelbase and a 172.6-inch length, which is about 14.4 feet. We think that the car-like ground clearance is a big knock against the CH-R as it eliminates one of the big benefits of choosing a crossover rather than a sedan.

The larger overall size of the 2023 Toyota C-HR may lead you to believe that it’s roomier than the 2023 Kia Soul, and while it is in some ways, it isn’t in as many ways as you likely expect. Both seat five, and the CH-R provides almost 44 inches of front legroom. That is one of its best attributes, but the Soul does provide more than 41. The Soul also provides more than 7 inches of additional rear legroom, which is a massive difference and almost hard to believe, and while you may suspect Toyota has put that space toward the cargo area, it hasn’t. The Soul cargo area is bigger by more than 5 cubic feet.

Kia Soul Mechanical specs

When comparing the mechanical characteristics of the 2023 Kia Soul vs 2023 Toyota C-HR, there are a lot of similarities. Both automakers have opted for a fuel-efficient four-cylinder. They pair that engine with a continuously variable transmission. That CVT distributes power to the front wheels, and all-wheel drive is not an option. The Kia engine has a reputation for being responsive and delivering good acceleration. The CH-R, however, does not, so it is highly recommended that you test-drive both of these models rather than rely on spec sheet figures as those can be misleading.

Both models have an 8-inch infotainment touch screen with all of the advanced features consumers expect. Beyond the base model, Arapahoe Kia upgrades you to a 10.25-inch touch screen. No upgrade is available for the Toyota. A robust driver-assistance suite is standard in both cases. Toyota does give you some features Kia does not, such as smart cruise control and blind-spot warning. However, you can get those features with the Soul, and it’s important to be mindful of the price difference. Kia also gives you some features that Toyota does not, such as driver attention monitoring.
