Vehicle Overview

With the 2019 model year, the Kia Optima, now in its fourth generation of production, got a midcycle facelift. This includes the addition of active safety features and an exterior styling update. The sporty midsize four-door sedan, however, is still split into four trim levels: LX, S, EX, and SX.

Denver CO - 2019 Kia Optima LX

KIA Optima LX

The 2019 Kia Optima LX is powered by the Theta GDI, which is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that outputs 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to its front-engine front-wheel-drive layout, the LX provides a fuel economy of 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. Two rows of seats in the cabin provide accommodation for up to five people. Passenger volume is measured at 120.7 cubic feet, and cargo volume is measured at 15.9 cubic feet (with the ability to fold down the seats to expand it into the cabin). Cloth upholstery is standard, and the driver's seat has 8-way manual adjustability with 2-way power lumbar support and the front passenger seat has 6-way power adjustability.

Denver CO - 2019 Kia Optima S

Standard comfort and convenience features on the LX trim include remote keyless entry, Bluetooth wireless technology for audio streaming and hands-free phone calling, a 3.5-inch TFT LCD meter display, a six-speaker audio system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, an AM/FM radio tuner, Siri® Eyes Free for virtual assistance, a USB port and audio jack for playing media from portable devices, a trial subscription to SiriusXM® satellite radio, UVO infotainment integration, and an 8-inch touchscreen. Standard safety features include a rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic stability control, hill start assist control, and seven airbags (two front impact airbags, a driver's knee airbag, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and two roof-mounted side curtain airbags). For the first time in its production history, the Kia Optima has lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, forward collision-avoidance assistance, driver attention warning, lane change assist, blind spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and driver attention warning as standard advanced-safety features.

KIA Optima S

The S trim level of the 2019 Kia Optima, like the LX, is also powered by the Theta GDI engine. However, on the S, Kia replaces cloth trim with racing-style upholstery and upgrades the driver's seat with 10-way power adjustability. Other additions and enhancements include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a smart key system for unlocking and locking doors without touching the key fob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and push-button engine start (brand-new for 2019).

Denver CO - 2019 Kia Optima SX
KIA Optima EX

It's at the EX trim level where the Theta GDI is supplanted by the Gamma G4FJ. This is a 1.6-liter turbocharged I4 that produces 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Notably, the Gamma is the smallest of the engines available on the Optima, and the DCT saves energy by providing a smoother driving feel due to using separate clutches for gear switching (one for the odd-numbered gears and the other for the even-numbered gears). As a result, the EX is the most fuel-efficient of the four trims: at 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. Comfort and convenience upgrades at the EX trim level include leather upholstery (which is new for 2019), front-seat heating ability, and dual charging-only USB ports. Regarding safety, the EX is enhanced with the addition of stop-and-go technology, pedestrian detection, and smart cruise control.

KIA Optima SX

Only the top-level SX trim of the 2019 Kia Optima has the Theta II, which is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that produces 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. On the SX, you will get sport-style leather seat trim, front-seat ventilation ability (in addition to heating ability), a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a memory system for the driver's seat and side mirrors, and front seating that consists of 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat with 4-way power lumbar support and a 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat with 2-way power lumbar support. Also unique to the SX trim are a 4.3-inch TFT color LCD meter display (in place of the 3.5-inch display), HD Radio, a trial subscription to SiriusXM Traffic, a voice-activated navigation system, and a 10-speaker 630-watt Harman Kardon® audio system.
